Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day >>> Did you know that…
- Scientists discovered the medicine used in birth control pills by learning from indigenous women that used wild yam to prevent conception?
- The US’s federal government structure was inspired by the Iroquois League of Nations?
- 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity is on indigenous lands?
But these are only a few reasons to celebrate International Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
We celebrate it because rights matter. We honor this day because there is still much to do.
We raise our voice remembering that in 2007, when the Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples finally passed in the United Nations, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia were the ONLY countries that voted against it. (All four have since reversed their vote.)
We raise our voice today because indigenous people are more likely to live in extreme poverty and because they are less likely to have legal recognition of their land rights, women are more likely to encounter violence, less likely to be educated in their mother tongue…
The best way to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day is for all of us to join indigenous communities around the world as they fight for their rights. There are many ways to do this. One way is to support our Information Into Action program but if that doesn’t feel right find a way to fight for indigenosu rights that does for example supporting indigenous women’s safety in Canada.
