We, Rainforest Foundation US, are calling out to members of the cryptocurrency community for your support. Since Bolsonaro took office in January, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is up 75% and forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon have doubled compared to the past year. As guardians of our rainforests, its animals and its people, we are working with The Giving Block to form a coalition of crypto sponsors, donors and media partners who will help stop this devastation.

Why the crypto community? Well, because we’re very much a part of it.

In May 2014, we at the Rainforest Foundation began developing our own cryptocurrency, BitSeeds. A PoW/PoS hybrid crypto, Bitseeds was at one point listed on Bittrex. Though our crypto was ultimately unsuccessful, we’ve continued to constantly explore ways to leverage crypto and blockchain to elevate our impact. Other past efforts include discussions around a Crypto Kitties “Jungle Kitty”, exploring Simple Token for direct payments, considerations around becoming an EOS block producer, and fundraising via CryptoCare.

Today, we are developing a blockchain transparency pilot with Regen Network, allowing donors to track our work in the Amazon Rainforest and reward local communities who are protecting their forests with crypto. We have long been a part of the crypto team but now we need you on our team. Here’s how you can help:

      • Donate Crypto: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin or Bitcoin Cash (We are willing to accept other cryptos as well)  Link: rainforestfoundation.org/donatecryptocurrency
      • Sponsor Us: We have sponsorship opportunities for key efforts around Amazon forest protection (We will honor your company/project/foundation accordingly.)  Contact: spelletier@rffny.org
      • Media: Please help us spread the word and grow the alliance  Contact: spelletier@rffny.org

“Business as usual has gotten us to this point. Philanthropy as usual won’t get us out. We need innovative solutions, and no one is more innovative than cryptocurrency users.”

 – Suzanne Pelletier, Executive Director at the Rainforest Foundation

We have long-known that the crypto community has the power to change the world. We hope you will help us do just that by joining our #CryptoFireFighter coalition.

Why donate cryptocurrency specifically?

“In the United States, and many other jurisdictions, cryptocurrencies are classified as property for tax purposes (like stocks). This means that when you donate appreciated crypto directly to a nonprofit, you don’t owe capital gains tax on those earnings, and neither does the nonprofit. You can donate more, and pay less in taxes. It’s that simple.” [The Giving Block
