There’s Still Time to Get Your Stock Portfolio Off the Naughty List!
Do you have stocks in your investment portfolio that no longer align with your environmental and social values? Not sure what to do with them?
We have the answer: gift appreciated stocks to the Rainforest Foundation! Donating stocks to the Rainforest Foundation is an easy, tax-savvy way to fund your charitable contributions and a great way get “naughty” stocks out of your portfolio and put to good use.
Whether you purchased or inherited this stock, there’s no reason to hold onto stocks that don’t reflect what’s important to you. Donate stocks to the Rainforest Foundation and we will convert your holdings into capital we can use to fund our programs that protect forests and support indigenous communities.
What if you want to clean up your portfolio, but don’t know where to begin? We’ve done some of the work for you. In partnership with an institutional advisory team with expertise in impact investing strategies, we have identified two metrics that you can use to begin to screen your holdings: Greenhouse gas emissions and water use. You can use these two metrics to begin to identify companies that are making progress towards sustainable goals, and those that are not.
Their analysis can help identify those stocks in your portfolio that have landed your portfolio on the Naughty List!
Below are a few examples of the metrics used when evaluating companies: A donation of appreciated securities qualifies you for a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the security on the gift date. This amount is usually deductible up to 30% of your adjusted gross income. When you transfer securities directly to the Rainforest Foundation, you also won’t incur capital gains tax. That is like saving on taxes twice! It allows you to access a greater tax benefit than if you simply sold the securities and donated the cash from the sale. (If the value of your securities has declined since you purchased them, it may be to your advantage to sell them and give the cash proceeds instead. Please check with your advisor for details.)
Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
Certain companies may be emitting significantly higher amounts of greenhouse gases than their industry peers. Carbon dioxide makes up more than 80% of the greenhouse gases emitted in the United States and around the globe. Emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity have increased substantially since large-scale industrialization began, and we continue to see the negative impact on climate every year.
Sustainable Water Uses
Shrinking water supply is a global issue. Scarcity creates significant challenges for water managers to simultaneously meet the needs of growing communities, sensitive ecosystems, and business owners in all sectors of the economy. Ingenuity is needed in water conservation, and corporations that do not responsibly maintain these ideals will continue to contribute to a growing problem.
