Can making a couple of phone calls save the rainforest? If you are Carol Alt, those calls can make all the difference. Alt dedicated September 11th to protecting the rainforest this year and joined other celebrities at Cantor’s Charity Day in raising money and awareness for charities and relief efforts around the world.
Carol Alt Returns to the Rainforest
Ironically, it was a modeling shoot in the rainforest of Venezuela that Alt credits for her commitment to a healthy and more sustainable diet. Alt was on a “Save the Rainforest” shoot and noticed she was not feeling well–she compared herself to another model who was really enjoying her experience. Alt realized she needed to change something if she was ever going to get that sense of well being back. Two decades later, as she again works to save the rainforest, she credits her discovery of a raw diet as the key to her increased energy and well being. For one day, Alt dedicated herself to protecting the rainforest at Cantor–from making phone calls to Cantor clients to winning ping-pong matches against the brokers she exhibited all the beauty and vivacity that continues to keep her in the public eye.
Raising Funds and Awareness
Every September on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Cantor Fitzgerald holds its annual Charity Day to honor the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald and 61 Eurobrokers who died in the attacks. Cantor Fitzgerald and its affiliates, BGC Partners and GFI Group, donate their revenues from the day to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, which provides aid to those impacted by natural disasters, as well as hundreds of other charitable causes. Since its inception, Charity Day has raised approximately $147 million.
Putting Information Into Action
The Rainforest Foundation is excited to use the proceeds of the Charity Day into our most innovative program to date. Today we are empowering indigenous communities with the data and technology they need to fight against the destruction of their rainforest home – we are in a unique moment, a time where a timely intervention can stop deforestation from the ground up. By investing in indigenous communities, we activate their ability to protect their own land, creating a network that will protect our planet for generations to come.
Today we know it’s a race against the clock to fight climate change. We have no time to lose. We also know that forests are 1/3 of the solution to stop the worst effects of climate change. Without the Amazon, life as we know it ceases. With Alt’s help, we are scaling up our most effective and innovative program yet.
